Harvesting maize is only part of the work. Drying, handling and storage decisions influence the quality of grain kept for sale, household use or animal feeding.
Prepare before harvest
Clean the drying area and storage space. Arrange suitable drying materials, bags and access to moisture testing. Avoid leaving these purchases until grain is already waiting for storage.
Dry and assess the grain
KALRO post-harvest guidance emphasises drying maize before storage. Use suitable moisture testing and obtain advice on the appropriate storage target. Do not rely only on how grain feels when handled.
Use storage correctly
Choose a storage method suitable for properly dried grain. Follow the manufacturer instructions for hermetic bags or other equipment, including checking for damage and sealing correctly. Storage equipment does not make wet or contaminated grain safe.
Inspect stocks and keep lots identifiable. If grain is mouldy or contamination is suspected, seek testing and professional advice. Do not assume that drying removes aflatoxin already present, or divert suspect grain into animal feed without assessment.
